If you have sensitive skin on your face you know that it doesn’t take much to aggravate redness, blemishes, dryness or an uncomfortable itchy sensation.
Sometimes, it may feel that no matter what you do your skin always seems unhappy. Your face can be exposed to pollutants and irritants throughout the day that can include everything from UV rays to artificial ingredients in skincare and makeup products.
The skin on your face is thinner than other parts of the body and as it’s also one of the most exposed parts, it’s important to take extra special care of your skin.
Luckily there are plenty of dermatologist-approved tips you can follow to keep sensitive skin complaints at bay. There are many facial faux pas we can make, but follow these simple tips and your skin should look and feel much healthier.
How To Look After Sensitive Skin
- Wash your face every day
You should wash your face every day, at least once. Wash with cold water and a natural cleanser.
- Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water, and make sure you moisturise your face. This should help to keep dryness at bay. There are also some herbal teas which can help keep your skin hydrated – worth switching with some of your caffeine beverages or as an evening drink to help you unwind.
- Avoid using perfumed products on your face
Look for non-fragranced products and products with no alcohol. These are known to affect sensitive skin.
- Avoid using abrasive washcloths
Be gentle! If your skin feels oily it can be tempting to rub vigorously with a washcloth, but this should be avoided. Always use a clean, soft washcloth, preferably made with natural fibres. Avoid harsh scrubs or loofah pads.
- Minimise the makeup
Using minimal makeup allows your skin to breathe. Avoid difficult to remove makeup products such as waterproof eye shadow, mascara and eyeliner. Always wash makeup off before bedtime!
- Wear SPF
SPF is your skin’s best defence against UV sun rays. Applying some each day will keep your face looking youthful for longer.
- Trying a new product?
Light, natural, minimal and moisturising are your best friends when it comes to skincare choice. If you are trying a new product, make sure to do a small patch test on your skin to check for any signs of irritation.
