No makeup reducing ageing

Could NOT wearing makeup be the anti-ageing remedy you’ve been searching for?

Makeup no doubt plays an integral role in many individuals’ daily lives. In fact, recent research found that 44% of women don’t like to leave their homes without makeup on.

There are many reasons why people choose to wear makeup. For some, wearing makeup can provide the confidence they need to live their very best lives. Whilst for others, wearing makeup is more a form of artistic expression.

Many more wear makeup to look and feel younger, but could your makeup use actually be having the opposite effect? We take a closer look at whether NOT wearing makeup could be the anti-ageing remedy you’ve been searching for…

It could accelerate ageing

When it comes to skincare, there are certain ingredients that you should avoid at all costs. The same theory applies when selecting your makeup must-haves.

The parabens, silicones, talc and propylene many makeup products contain can accelerate the ageing process to leave your skin looking and feeling even older. We’ll let The Wellnest explain more:

“All of these ingredients have the potential to build up on your skin, which can effectively trap oils and sweat beneath them. The result? Breakouts, irritation, and congestion. When this happens, Dr. Green says that skin can appear dull and uneven, which can translate to a more mature visage.”

It clogs the pores triggering a vicious cycle

Despite being popularly used as a way to camouflage the skin, the regular use of makeup can trigger a vicious cycle for those who suffer from acne and other skin conditions.

Makeup can clog the pores, especially if you don’t regularly cleanse and exfoliate. The resulting build-up can worsen acne and make breakouts more common. As the acne worsens, this may lead to the application of more makeup to conceal spots and blemishes, which will exacerbate the condition further.

Team this with poor makeup brush hygiene, and the use of makeup can be particularly damaging to the skin. By avoiding makeup or curbing excessive wear you can improve the health of your skin, lessen the impact of skin conditions, and enjoy a fresher, younger-looking appearance.

It may not be as protective as you think

Makeup is regularly billed as a way to protect the skin and is even used as a form of sun protection by some. Many makeup products offer built-in SPF, but it’s important to note that makeup alone will not provide the sun protection you need to successfully safeguard your skin.

Unfortunately, many people have unrealistic expectations of the sun protection factor of makeup. This leaves many at greater risk of premature ageing due to exposure to damaging UVB and UVA rays.

It can make wrinkles more visible

The coverage offered by makeup is a point of interest for all, however, it isn’t a matter of the more coverage, the better…

Certain makeup products, like powders and other talc-based makeup, sit in fine lines and wrinkles to make them appear more visible. With regular use, these makeup products also enlarge pores contributing to the aged appearance you were looking to avoid.

Makeup removal may be essential but this could age you too!

Whether you wear makeup daily or not very often at all, one golden rule that should never be forgotten is that you must remove it before you go to sleep. Find more tips for perfecting your nighttime skincare regime.

Sleeping in makeup is one big beauty no-no, but the process of removing heavy makeup can be just as damaging.

Removing heavy makeup daily can tug and stretch the skin, causing it to loosen, sag and age prematurely. The same is true when roughly applying makeup, many makeup users pull the skin taut to apply eyeliner, contour and blend.

When removing or applying makeup treat the skin with care, being particularly gentle in more delicate areas such as under your eyes and around the edges of your eyelids. You should also use a cleanser that’s made for makeup removal, just like our gentle but thorough Buttermilk Cleanser.
